Please let us know if you want to look for an apartment by yourself, so that we can provide you with some information.
Landlords will ask you for (at least) 1 month´s deposit and 1 month´s rent upfront. If you use the services of an agency, they will charge you comission to the amount of one month´s rent (in case of a whole apartment), or around 50 euros per person in the case of a room in a shared apartment. Not many estate agents provide this service (since they are more focussed on selling than on renting).
You can also try search for accommodation privately. The best places to search are local newspapers, the internet and the noticeboards at the universities. It is not unusual to have a meeting with a landlord and find ten other people waiting at the same time.
