FAQ

Being a Erasmus Student in Madrid
Have you decided to spend a semester or a whole academic year as an Erasmus student in one of the universities of Madrid? Good choice, but now it´s time to get ready and prepare your suitcases for this great experience. You might have three big issues in your head: first, the language; second, your accommodation; and third, get to know new people. Most of the members of Inhispania team were Erasmus students once and that´s why we have thought about solutions for you:

Learning Spanish: we have prepared special offers especially designed for the needs of Erasmus students in Madrid. They include an intensive course (1 to 4 weeks) and afterwards a regular course (twice a week in the evenings).

During your first weeks in Madrid, when the classes at the university have not started yet, you have the time to get deep into the language and get a decent level of Spanish.

After this intensive course you will be able to speak Spanish and your student and university life can start now. And you can continue with a regular course. These courses take place twice a week in the evenings so you won´t have problems with your university timetable and can enjoy Spanish classes in small groups (max. 9 students per group) during your whole stay in Madrid.

Just a tip: use your time intelligently in Madrid because a semester is not such a long time as it looks like. Every year we get a lot of students that after having completed a course at the university feel that their Spanish has not improved so much as they expected. You won´t like this annoying whistle of "I should have taken a Spanish course"

Accommodation: To find a place to stay in Madrid is not easy and even more difficult when you try it from abroad. Inhispania can help you at least during the first weeks of your stay, when you can stay at one of our shared apartments and during this time you can try to find something by yourself or even find a place to share with the other students you have just met at school. We will certainly help you with tips and patience in finding a place that suits you. Visit the section of accommodation to get more information. Due to the huge demand, this service is only offered for students of intensive courses.

Get to know people: New city, foreign language and you alone, which does not look very pleasant, does it? During your course with us it will be very easy for you to get in touch with other students that are in the same situation as you. Thanks to our activities, Inhispania has become a reference point in Madrid for Erasmus students from all over the world.

Some tips for self search
Room sizes in Madrid are relatively small (ca. 10 m.)

Remember that breakfast in Spain in not like in other countries. It is basicly a coffee or tea, with toast, croissant, corn flakes or something similar. Do not expect a huge breakfast.

If you are going to have a long term stay in Madrid, the best option is that you book the first month through us and then you have time to look for something by yourself. To find an apartment / flat in Madrid is not easy and it is even more diffilcult when doing it from abroad. Please let us know if you want to look for an apartment by yourself, so that we can provide you with some information.

Landlords will ask you for (at least) 1 month´s deposit and 1 month´s rent upfront. If you use the services of an agency, they will charge you comission to the amount of one month´s rent (in case of a whole apartment), or ca. 50 Euros / person in the case of a room in a shared apartment. Not many estate agents provide this service (since they are more focussed on selling than on renting).

You can also try to do the search of accommodation privately. Best places to search are local newspapers, internet and notices on boards at the universities. It is not unusual to have a meeting with a landlord and find ten other people waiting at the same time.

Due to the huge demand, prices in Madrid have increased in the last years. When you see something you like, do not hesitate to take it. No landlord will wait for your answer since they have enough people who are interested.
